Justice Department lawyers warned that the predominance of Google’s search is being poured into the race that threatens to suppress rivals as the stage of antitrust historical issue against technology giant began on Monday.
Google is already exploiting artificial intelligence as a “method to get in search” and will continue to do so without government intervention, said David Dahlquist’s lawyer while opening statements in a court in Washington, DC.
“The remedy of this court should be ready and not ignore what is on the horizon,” said Dahlquist, who noted that the government would call witnesses from Openai and the confusion to weigh on how Google’s dominance has affected the race.
The case is being heard by US district judge Amit Mehta, who will determine the right tools after deciding last August that Google led by Sundar Pichai is a “monopoly” that illegally prevails in the online search market.
Doj has asked Mehta to force Google to sell his browser online chrome. Feds also said Google should complete its tactic to pay companies like Apple and AT&T to ensure that its search engine is activated as a default on most smartphones.
Moreover, the federations are seeking a court order ordering Google to share its search data with rivals. They have also pushed for a forced deviation of the Google Android operating system if the initial remedies ordered by the court prove ineffective after five years.
Google’s parent alphabet shares lowered 3% in midnight trade in a wide sale.
Google said it would appeal to the judge’s final decision on the matter after the remedies are placed.
The company claims that a forced sale of Chrome and Android will “break these platforms” put the US national security at risk and potentially allows China to open the US in the race to develop it and other major technologies.
“When it comes to antitrust remedies, the US Supreme Court said” Care is essential, “said Google Lee-Anne Mulholland’s regulatory case in a blog post before the trial.” The proposal I want dumps that care for the wind. We look forward to making our case in court. “
Google officials are said to have oppressed Trump’s Doj to ease his proposed tools in the weeks that led to court.
Closing statements are planned for late May. Mehta’s final decision on how to adjust the Google monopoly are expected until August.
The case of the search was initially brought in 2020 during President Trump’s first term. He went to trial in 2023 under President Joe Biden.
In a speech outside the Court on Monday, Donji’s Antitrust Chief Gail Slater said the issue to disrupt Google “has unified our nation” and confirmed “a two -party consensus that strong antitrust application against large technology is very much needed”.
Slater also dismissed Google’s argument that a split would somehow threaten US national security.
“You know what is dangerous? The threat that Google presents to our freedom of speech, to our freedom of thought, to liberate American digital markets. You know what is irresponsible?
The DOJ search issue phase started just days after Google suffered a major loss in special federal antitrust lawsuits, aiming at its digital advertising business.
One federal judge ruled that Google operates two separate illegal monopolies on digital advertising technology. Doj is also looking for a division of the company in that case.
