Former First Lady Michelle Obama revealed another reason why she passed President Donald Trump’s second inauguration, and this time was about her wardrobe.
“It started to have nothing to wear,” Obama said in a Monday episode of her podcast, “IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson.”
“I mean, I had a positive way, because I’m always prepared for every funeral, everything,” Obama added. “I stroll with the right dress, travel in clothes just if something goes out. So I was like, if I don’t do it, I told them to say my team, I don’t want to have a dress ready, right? Because it’s so easy to say, let me do the right thing.”
Prior to the inauguration, former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama shared a statement with the Associated Press confirming that the former First Lady would not participate in the January 20 event.
“Former President Barack Obama has been confirmed to attend the 60th inaugural ceremonies,” the statement said. “Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not participate in the next inauguration.”
Michelle Obama also did not attend the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter on January 9.
During a conversation with Robinson, her brother and actor Taraji P. Henson, Obama recognized speculation about her marriage being in trouble as why she passed the inauguration.
“My decision to overcome inauguration, what people do not understand, or my decision to make elections earlier this year that fit me with such ridicule and criticism,” she said. “People couldn’t believe that I was saying not for any other reason, that they had to assume that my marriage was breaking, you know?”
Henson praised Obama’s decision not to attend, saying women are “shock absorbers”.
“You have had to be shock absorber for your husband, your children, for your mother, family, your loved ones, because of where you were sitting in the public eye,” Henson said. “This is not right for you. When you have to ever live for you? I applaud you. I am happy to take care of yourself in the way you need it.”
Obama said now she is trying to teach her daughters Sasha and Malia, “The Art I said no”.
“I want them to start practicing art now and no, because I see it in them – nice, brilliant, not wanting to get anything like, always showing gratitude,” Obama said. “Feeling as if they are enough now. It is a practice. It is a muscle you need to build. Because if you do not constantly build it, you do not develop it.”
She also traversed divorce rumors during a conversation in Podcast of April 9 in Podcast of Sophia Bush “Work in Progress”, saying the passage of inauguration had nothing to do with her marriage.
The former first lady said the decision not to attend was a simple one.
“I am here really trying to master my life and deliberately practice making the choice that was appropriate to me,” Obama said. “And it took everything in my power not to do what was perceived as right, but I do things that were suitable for me – it was a difficult thing for me to do.”
