A Black Washington Post’s opinion writer said he left the newspaper’s editorial board for a dispute with a white colleague about a part of George’s polling laws with which he disagreed – accusing him of “stealing me from my humanity”, according to a report.
Jonathan Capehert, who was the only African -American Board of the Editorial Board when he left in 2023, writes in a new book entitled “However here I am: lessons from the search for a black man for home”, which he withdrew over a dispute with another opinion editor, Karen Tumulty, reported.
In his book, Capehert, who remains a columnist on paper, writes that he clashed with a shock on an editorial who dealt with the criticism of then President Joe Biden for a Georgia vote law in 2021.
Biden described the law as “Jim Crow 2.0” – a characterization that the Washington Post’s editorial board estimated to be “hyperbolic”.
This did not sit well with Capehert, who agreed with Biden’s view of the law and was upset that the editorial could make him look like he supported the position of the board that he was “hyperbolic”, according to the traffic light.
According to the book, Capehert was angry when Tumulty later did not apologize for him. He wrote that he also felt removed when Tumulty said that the choice of Biden’s words was offensive to the people who had lived through racial division in the south.
“Tumulty got an incident where I felt she ignored and built the insult by stealing me from my humanity,” he wrote in the book, which was published last week.
“She couldn’t or would not see that I was black, that I came to a conversation with knowledge and stories she could never have, that my worldview, though different from her, was just as valuable.”
Capehert left the editorial board after complaining about the incident to human resources and other senior figures in the paper, the traffic light reported.
Capehert’s frustrations were quite visible that after the publisher was published, the editor of the Opinion David Shipley was asked to meet privately with Rev. Al Sharpton to discuss the incident and the deficiencies claimed in covering the letter of the letter reported traffic lights.
The claims made by Capehert in his new book are reported to have been listed among the Washington Post staff, according to the traffic light.
Capehert’s description of the incident in his book, as well as a recent discussion he held with former administration official Biden Susan Rice at a local bookstore in Washington, DC, has been the subject of internal recruitment in the newspaper in recent days, the traffic light.
According to two Washington Post employees, the staff has complained privately that the book has publicly raised current colleagues against each other and seemed to direct the editorial instructions of the Post on College, as well as rules that limit staff from the public discovery of internal editorial conversations.
The post has requested comment from The Washington Post, Tumulty and Capehart.
In a statement to traffic lights, Tumulty noted that the paper had repeatedly published part of the thought by criticizing Georgia’s voting laws in 2021 by limiting the voting entry, but said that it would not comment further on the editorial book or processes of the post.
“I have a very different recognition of events and conversations described in this book, but disrespectful of the long principle that the Washington Post Editorial Board discussions are confidential, I will say nothing further,” Tumulty traffic lights.
Some current and previous staff told the traffic light that they thought that Capehert’s decision to go after shocking a book and his book tour on an editorial dispute, as well as the current incident description, was unfair to him.
“ED, current and previous board members are obliged not to publicly discuss specific discussions,” said former Opinion Chuck Lane Redactor in a text for traffic lights.
“I can only say that Karen took on a heartless leading role when the newspaper needed it, and performed it excellently and 100 percent with honor, despite the tremendous health challenges – for which I admire it very much.”
The Washington Post Editorial Board has suffered a considerable riot in the last nine months.
Shortly before the November 5 presidential elections, the owner of billionaire Jeff Bezos blocked the editorial board from the approval of the Democratic candidate, the then president of Vice Kamala Harris.
Earlier this year, Bezos arranged the thought section in order to promote “personal freedoms” and “free markets” – an action that prompted Shipley’s resignation.
