The main data violation exposes 86 million AT&T client records, fueling the fear of identity theft: SSN among the details violated by hackers

AT&T has experienced a massive violation of personal data, so if you are one of the more than 100 million people using the company, you will want to be on the guard.

According to a new report by Hack Read, more than 86 million customers have been affected with leaked details ranging from full names to birth dates, phone numbers, email addresses and physical addresses.

Reported reported that more than 44 million social security numbers were also involved in data flow.

While each of these data groups presents risks of their own intimacy, together they can create complete identity profiles that can be used for fraud or identity theft.

The stolen data is said to have been fully deciphered and first posted on a Russian cyber crime forum on May 15 before being re-loaded on the same forum on June 3.

Hackers are reported to have entered the data by entering accounts that they had no multi-factor certificate, and this leak appears to be associated with an original hack from the Shinyhunters group in April 2024.

“It is not uncommon for criminals online to re-recover data previously discovered for financial benefits,” AT&T spokesman for Hack Read told a statement.

“We just learned about the claims that AT&T data is being made available for sale in dark online forums, and we are conducting a full investigation.”

The original seller of the exposed data claimed that this leak is “initially one of the databases of snow violation” – but according to Hack Reads analysis, there are about 16 million more records in this violation than the previous one.

AT&T also acknowledged security researchers that this violation was related to the original 2024 violation.

“After analyzing by our internal teams as well as external data consultants, we are sure these are the retained data released earlier at The Dark Web in March 2024,” the company said in a statement.

“The affected clients were notified at the time. We have announced the implementation of the law on this latest development.”

If you are an AT&T customer, it is possible that your personal and private information may be part of the new flow. Although your data would be discovered in this trick, it is likely because it was already unprotected in violating August 2024 national public data, which exposed “three decades of social security in the black market”.

To check if your information was revealed in that violation, you can check through the pentister, an online security firm, going to NPD.Penter.com and entering your information, which will allow you to see a list of your violated accounts.

Security experts are also asking customers to keep a look at their credit reports.
